The Hotel

On the 27 th September 1977, the Yak & Yeti opened as a 120 room, 5-star hotel – the first of its kind in Nepal. A new wing of an additional 150 rooms was built in harmony with the architectural features of the old palace, Lal Durbar, bringing the room total to 270. The whole hotel is a sumptuous array of beautiful artefacts, art and traditionally crafted fixtures. Attention to detail has been meticulously considered throughout, giving the feeling you aren’t just in a hotel as much as an art gallery or museum. We proudly offer two dining choices – Our Indian Fine-Dining restaurant, Spice Room overlooking the garden and The Chimney, our historic, fine dining restaurant. Over the years the hotel has been upgraded and extended and now boasts a shopping arcade, a swimming pool, two tennis courts and a state of the art fitness center and luxury spa.

The History

The original palace, Lal Durbar or Red Palace, is over 100 years old and you can enjoy many of the original heritage interiors that have been lovingly maintained. At the epicentre of the hotel’s rich history, Lal Durbar now hosts a grand ballroom, a casino, banquet rooms and our famous Chimney restaurant. The Rooms

All 245 rooms at the Yak & Yeti offer comfort and luxury. All the features you would expect from a 5-star hotel, every room is fitted with smoke detectors, safe locks, a desk, LCD TV with satellite reception, tea/coffee making facilities, phone, high-speed internet/wifi and a minibar.

Hotel Yak & Yeti has a variety of dining options catering to any mood as well as our lively bar if you fancy wetting your whistle. Our opulent full American-style buffet breakfast is offered in our coffee shop and for our club guests a continental buffet breakfasts is served at our Club Lounge. Our fitness area and gardens offer a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, tennis courts and jogging track. Our Nirvana Spa includes a variety of treatment packages, with massage rooms and sauna. Hotel Yak & Yeti proudly offers "The Lal Durbar Convention Center", the ultimate venue for meetings, conferences and exhibitions in Kathmandu and an all-time favorite destination for luxury weddings. The hotel also offers customary laundry, dry cleaning and beauty services. The reception is open 24 hours to serve our guests, and we have night time security. Airport transfers are available.

The artist

Rolf A. Kluenter graduated from the State Academy of Fine Arts, Dusseldorf, Germany. He has been a resident artist in Nepal since 1982 and regularly exhibits in Europe, U.S.A. and Australia. Rolf A. Kluenter is known for his exploration texture and form in the various mediums of wood, clay, and handmade paper. A long time student of Buddhism, Kluenter gained his inspiration for the Radheshyam Saraf Collection from a conversation he had with a Tibetan Rinpoche.

Art Collection

Among its many distinctions, as a former palace, a five star deluxe hotel, as a business destination, a rendezvous for superb dining, or for fantastic cultural events, the Hotel Yak and Yeti further honors Nepal's contemporary cultural-historical traditions in its premiere art exhibitions.

The exclusive Radheshyam Saraf Art Collection is now on display in the business center and Club Shangrila. The heritage of contemporary impressions and age-old traditions meets in artist Rolf A Kluenter's bold calligraphic chalk sketches. Explore space, symbol and Tibetan Buddhist discipline in the densely textured handmade paper and resonating icons of the collection. The Fifth Seal is the literature component of the Radheshyam Saraf Art Collection. Radheshyam Saraf, a long time promoter of fine arts and cultural heritage of the Himalayan region, was dedicated The Fifth Seal and the collection by his son, Arun Saraf. The Fifth Seal, available at the Yak and Yeti, is a collection of essay's from western scholars of repute who consider the development and structure of the different scripts the artist Rolf A. Kluenter uses in his work. The compilation and editing of the catalog was done by Andreas Kretschmar, executive director of Art Network International, Scholar of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies, and a resident of Nepal since 1985.
